Mas, se uma estrada em construção ainda está acessível ao tráfego, talvez você possa optar por uma outra rota para evitar o congestionamento (an alternative route). A primeira opção ainda existe, e a alternativa te permite a escolha.
Ambos os termos também são adjetivos. Como adjetivo, o termo alternate significa (1) happening in turns, ou também (2) serving in place of another. A palavra Alternative como adjetivo pode significar (1) providing a choice between two or more things, ou ainda (2) existing outside the mainstream.
E é claro, alternate também funciona como verbo, significando to take turns. O termo Alternative não possui sentido de verbo.
