Valentine’s Day – O Dia dos Namorados

People exchange cards with their beloved and give heart shaped chocolate boxes.

This day is celebrated in honor of Saint Valentine (Rome) but is a popular tradition in which most couples celebrate their relationship.

St. Valentine was a priest in Rome who was martyred in about AD 269. Legend has it that he was persecuted by the Roman Emperor Claudius II because Valentine secretly perfomed marriege ceremonies for young men when the emperor had ordered that young men could not marry in order to make good soldiers.

On the evening that Valetine was to be executed, he wrote the first “valentine” card himself, adressed to a young girl and it read “From your Valentine”.
