Halloween is an annual holiday celebrated October 31. On this day, everyone goes out trick or treating, attends costume parties, carves jack-o’lanterns, visits haunted attractions, plays pranks, tells scary stories and watches horror movies.
Where did this holiday and its customs originate?
Halloween is known as the day of the dead. It means Hallow’s Evening. The evening that antecedes All Hallow’s Day (All Saints Day), which in the Christian religions is celebrated November 1st. Although All Saints Day is a Christian holiday, November 1st was already celebrated by the Celts in a feast called Samhain. It marked the end of summer and the start of the Celtic New Year.
On this day, it was believed that the dead would rise from their graves. As the people were afraid of the evil spirits, they would wear ugly masks to scare them away.
Others would go out knocking on door to door “souling” on November 1st, asking for food and in return they would say prayers for the dead. It evolved to today’s trick or treating, except that nowadays no one says prayers for the family’s deceased members. And supposing you do not give the children a treat, they will most likely play a trick on you, hence the name “Trick or Treat”.
Carving pumpkins also came from the souling custom of carving turnips into lanterns. This was a way to remember the souls in purgatory. When the immigrants went to North America, they did not find turnips and used pumpkins instead.
